Traditional
festivals in Ha Giang province:
Khau Vai Love Market Festival
Time: 27th day of the third lunar month.
Location: Khau Vai Commune, Meo Vac District, Ha Giang
Province.
Activities: This is the Location for couples in the
region to make a date, and it is also the Location for
former lovers to meet each other, and look for boy or
girls friend.
Traditional
festivals in Vinh Phuc province:
Yen Lap Festival (in the fourth lunar month)
Time: The 21st of the fourth lunar month.
Location: Yen Lap Commune, Vinh Tuong District, Vinh Phuc
Province.
Objects of worship: The village's tutelary god.
Activities: Banh giay feast, sword dance, buffalo
fighting.
Traditional
festivals in Bac Ninh province:
Dove releasing Festival (Thiet Ung Festival)
Time: 27th day of the third lunar month.
Location: Yen Phong District, Bac Ninh Province.
Activities: Contest of each flock of 10 doves (5
couples) in the end of spring. During this time, the
weather is nice, rare wind, without kestrels and hawks
(they usually fight dove). The areas which are famous
for this games: Hoang Mai, Dong Anh (Hanoi), Duong
River, Dau (Bac Ninh Province).
Traditional
festivals in Lang Son province:
Ta Va Pagoda Festival
Time: 12th day to the 15th day of the fourth lunar
month.
Location: Chi Lang Commune, Trang Dinh District, Lang Son
Province.
Objects of worship: The Buddha, Agriculture genie, Quan
Cong and Luu Bi.
Activities: Praying for good crops, worshipping,
human chess playing.
Traditional
festivals in Hai Phong City:
Dragon Boat Race Festival
Time: April 1 (by solar calendar).
Location: Cat Ba Town, Cat Hai District, Hai Phong City.
Objects of worship: President Ho Chi Minh interested in
fishing work.
Activities: Boat race celebrates the day President
Ho Chi Minh paid a visit to Cat Ba fishing village in
1959 and that day is also the traditional day of
aquiculture.
Opening of the race is tug-of-war item between boat
teams on the sea. After that, fishermen from the
territorial waters of Central and Southern parts perform
coracle shaking. Then the dragon racing starts. The
racetrack is 1km long. Signal flags are at two heads of
the line. Racing boats will have to race 3 or 4 rounds.
The prize will give for the boat comes to the finish
first. This is a chance to find excellent rowers and
boat commanders. The racing festival is very attractive.

festivals in Hung Yen province:
Ban Village Yen Nhan Festival
Time: 11th day of the fourth lunar month.
Location: Ban Town, Yen Nhan Village, My Hao District, Hung
Yen Province.
Objects of worship: General Doan Thuong (Dong Hai Royal
Highest) of Ly Dynasty.
Activities: Procession, boi chess, cock fighting,
hau dong, sortilege.
Tu Phap Pagoda Festival
Time: The 8th day of the fourth lunar month.
Location: Van Lam District, Hung Yen Province.
Objects of worship: Four female deities: Phap Van (Cloud
Deity), Phap Vu (Rain Deity), Phap Loi (Thunder Deity)
and Phap Dien (Light Deity).
Activities: Festival of exchanging visitors and
helpers in some villages, a great procession of villages
that worship Ladies but only processions of three Ladies
Van, Vu, Loi come to Lady Dien. The villagers believe
that if Lady Dien is taken out of the pagoda, the
village will fire.
Traditional festivals in Quang Ninh province:
Bach Dang Festival
Time: 9th day of the fourth lunar month.
Location: Festival center is at Tran Hung Dao Temple - Vua
Ba Shrine and other temples and communal houses in Yen
Hung District, Quang Ninh Province:
- Yen Giang Communal House (Yen Giang Commune)
- Trung Ban Communal House (Lien Hoa Commune)
- Trung Coc Temple (Nam Hoa Commune)
- Dien Cong Communal House (Dien Cong Commune)
Objects of worship: Tran Hung Dao.
Activities: Bach Dang traditional swimming
festival.
At Tran Hung Dao Temple and Vua Ba Shrine on the main
festival day (the victory day of defeating Yuan - Mongol
invaders on Bach Dang River) the 8th of the fourth lunar
month there are reappearing the drill of Tran Dynasty's
people and troops performance, sacrifices, Tran Hung
Dao's statue procession, Bach Dang traditional swimming
festival, Bach Dang traditional performance, wrestling,
human chess... Bach Dang Festival, in which many
governmental leaders attend, is big and sacred.
Khai Uong Festival
Time: The good day of the fourth lunar month.
Location: Yen Hung District, Quang Ninh Province.
Activities: Tien Cong worshipping ceremony in
communal house and shrine, then people go to the field
to sow rice.
Traditional
festivals in Ha Tay province:
Quat Dong Festival
Time: 12th to the 16th day of the fourth lunar month.
Location: Quat Dong Commune, Thuong Tin District, Ha Tay
Province.
Objects of worship: Le Cong Hanh, the founder of
embroidered with laces and also was the first doctoral
candidate under the reign of Mac Dang Dung.
Activities: Incense offering ceremony, recalling
worship.
Tri Chi Festival
Time: 4th day of the fourth lunar month.
Location: Tri Trung Commune, Phu Xuyen District, Ha Tay
Province.
Objects of worship: Linh Lang Dai Vuong, who had great
merit in resistance war against Tong enemy.
Activities: Sacrifice-offering ceremony, god
procession, stick fighting, chess playing.
Tu Nhien Commune Festival
Time: 1st day of the fourth lunar month.
Location: Tu Nhien Commune, Thuong Tin District, Ha Tay
Province.
Objects of worship: Chu Dong Tu, princesses Tien Dung
and Tay Sa, and Dao Thanh (general of Hai Ba Trung).
Activities: Water procession, boi chess.
Traditional
festivals in Thai Binh province:
Quang Lang Festival
Time: The 14th day of the fourth lunar month and the
14th day of the sixth lunar month. The main festival day
is on the 14th day of the fourth lunar month.
Location: Quang Lang Village, Thuy Hai Commune, Thai Thuy
District, Thai Binh Province.
Objects of worship: Ong Dung, Ba Da, Ba Chua Muoi (Queen
of Salt or Nguyet Anh) - the third imperial concubine of
King Tran Anh Tong.
Activities: Ba Chua Muoi's death anniversary on the
14th day of the sixth lunar month includes incense
offering ceremony, Ong Dung, Ba Da's effigies dancing,
water puppetry, singing, vieing for effigies then put in
salt field and fish boat. The procession of Ong Dung, Ba
Da on the 14th day of the fourth lunar month.
Traditional
festivals in Thanh Hoa province:
Ban Fair
Time: 15th day of the fourth lunar month. It is held
once every 3 years.
Location: Dinh Tuong and Dinh Tang communes, Yen Dinh
District, Thanh Hoa Province.
Objects of worship: Mr. and Mrs. La Sat.
Activities: Spring festival, selling and buying oxes, cows, buffaloes, farming implement and
agricultural productions to pray for good luck.
Traditional
festivals in Hanoi City:
Chem Temple Festival
Time: 14th to the 16th day of the fourth lunar month.
Location: Thuy Phuong Commune, Tu Liem District, Hanoi.
Objects of worship: Ly Ong Trong and his wife - Princess
Bach Tinh.
Activities: Water procession on river, releasing
pigeons.
Chem Temple is situated 12km from the center of Hanoi.
Chem Temple Festival is a big festival in the area of
former Hanoi only after Co Loa and Dong festivals. It
involves: water procession consists of 3 dragon boats on
the Hong River, votive paper procession, moc duc
ceremony (god's statue washing), royal order procession,
worshipping Buddha and traditional folk games:
tug-of-war, kite flying, pigeons releasing, trai racing
between villages in the region.
Chi Nam Festival (Phu Dong Festival)
Time: 8th day of the fourth lunar month.
Location: Le Chi Commune, Gia Lam District, Hanoi.
Objects of worship: Saint Dong, Mr. Hien Cong, who had
merit of fighting Yin invaders.
Activities: Sacrifice-offering ceremony, battle
performance, stick fighting, stick vieing, and coconut
vieing.
Dong Co Temple Festival
Time: 4th day of the fourth lunar month.
Location: Tay Ho District, Hanoi.
Objects of worship: Bronze Drum Genie.
Activities: The festival is held in commemorating
King Ly Thai Tong when he made the procession of Bronze
Drum Genie in Dan Ne (Thanh Hoa) to Thang Long (Hà Noi
now), set up a temple to worship the genie.
Thuong Phuc Village Festival
Time: the 16th day of the second lunar month, the 14th
day of the fourth lunar month and the 27th day of the
fourth lunar month.
Location: Thuong Phuc Village, Ta Thanh Oai Commune, Thanh
Tri District, Hanoi.
Objects of worship: Prince Ly Tham, Zen Buddhist Ho Ba
Lam.
Activities: Contest of rowing boat on river
(sometimes uses wood boat, sometimes uses coracle). Rice
cooking contest (A couple cook rice while going and
dancing); trong quan singing on boat in the evening.
Vo Village Festival
Time: 9th day of the fourth lunar month.
Location: Hoi Xo Hamlet, Phu Dong Commune, Gia Lam
District, Hanoi.
Objects of worship: Duc Hoa Bao Chinh and two his
younger sisters.
Activities: Tiger dance.
Traditional
festivals in Quang Binh province:
Bao Ninh Village Festival
Time: From the 14th day to the 16th day of the fourth
lunar month.
Location: Bao Ninh Commune, Dong Hoi City, Quang Binh
Province.
Objects of worship: Nhan than (father and son of
fisherman) and Ca Ong (whale).
Activities: Procession of Ong's bone, "Ho khoan,
cheo can" performance, bong (flower) dance. Sea festival
involves the ceremony of floating paper boats, paper
fish to the sea and praying, the boat race of six
villages.
Cau Ngu Festival
Time: 14th day of the fourth lunar month.
Location: Dong Hoi City, Quang Binh Province.
Objects of worship: Ca Ong (whale).
Activities: Procession of Ong's bone from village
to communal house.
Traditional festivals in Dong Thap province:
Dinh Yen Communal House Festival
Time: 16th day of the fourth lunar month.
Location: Lap Vo District, Dong Thap Province.
Objects of worship: Mr. Pham Van An, the first person
reclaimed wasteland and set up the village.
Activities: The solemn communal house festival with
worshipping ceremonies by mounted team, lan binh team,
pupil team... to commemorate Mr. Pham Van An.
Traditional
festivals in Can Tho province:
Binh Thuy Communal House Festival (Thuong dien)
Time: 12th to the 14th day of the fourth lunar month.
Location: Binh Thuy Ward, Binh Thuy District, Can Tho City.
Objects of worship: Thanh Hoang Bon Canh (God of Land).
Activities: Thuong dien ceremony (worship God of
Land after harvesting rice), praying for peace,
sacrifice ceremony, procession of god on dragon and
phoenix-decorated palanquin, welcoming royal ordinance
on three splendidly-decorated boats, boi singing in
three nights.
Traditional festivals in
Ha Giang province:
Praying for rain Festival
Time: 18th day of the fourth lunar month.
Location: Long An Province.
Activities: Traditional sacrifice-offering
ceremony, the praying-for-rain ceremony is also
presented by ghe races on the rivers and canals. Ghe is
made by long and tapering bamboo, contains 20 rowers.
