Mekong Island:
- Description: Small tourist boats can be found along
the riverfront north of Street 178. They offer 1-2 hour
cruises along the river from Phnom Penh brings tourists
to this resort situated on Mekong Island. Tourists can
dine in the restaurant, visit the zoo and the weaving
villages, ride elephants and watch traditional dance
performances. (Capitol Guesthouse runs budget oriented
half-day Mekong cruises for 10$/person.).
National Library:
- Location: St. 92 Khan Daun Penh.
- Description: Historical Sites and Buildings
National Museum:
- Description: Was built from 1917-1918 and located in
the North of the Royal Palace. The National Museum
contains a lot of precious ancient objects relating to
Cambodian history. It attracts a lot of international
visitors, which ranks after the Royal Palace.
Old Market (Phsar Chas):
- Description: A local market that is not at all geared
to the tourist. It carries such items as fruits and
vegetable, second hand cloths, hardware, motorcycle
parts and religious items. In the late afternoon food
vendors and fruit sellers set up mats along Street 13 in
preparation for the evening market. The dinner rush hour
makes for a confusing, dirty potentially photogenic
scene.
Orussey Market:
- Description: Centrally located, Orussey Market is much
more geared towards locals than tourists; hence you will
not find as much in the way of souvenirs as the other
markets mentioned. A huge array of foodstuffs is on
offer including the wet market with fresh meat, poultry
and seafood. Other items in abundance include house
ware, hardware and electronic goods.
Pagodas:
- Description: In Phnom Penh, you are never outside
walking distance of a pagoda. Visitors are almost always
welcome. Ray Zepp's A Field Guide to Cambodian Pagodas
is an excellent introduction to Phnom Penh's pagodas and
Cambodian Buddhism.
Phnom Penh Capital:
- Description: Situated at the confluence of the Mekong,
Bassac and Tonle Sap Rivers, Cambodia's capital Phnom
Penh has a population of approximately 1.5 million
people. Despite the dilapidation resulting from decades
of war, the city retains its traditional Khmer and
colonial charm. French villas along tree-lined
boulevards remind the visitor that the city was once
considered the gem of Southeast Asia. Recent political
changes have triggered an economic boom of sorts, with
new hotels, restaurants, bars and nightclubs springing
up around the city.

Preah Keo Morakot Temple:
- Description: Wat Preah Keo Morakot had imitated the
Cambodian architecture and been built since 1892 to
1902. Then, it was removed and reconstructed in 1962.
Previously, the temple was called Wat Ubor Soth Rotana
Ream Temple because the King of Cambodia used this
temple for holding ceremonies to follow the eight silos
on every Buddhist holiday. In addition, the relatives of
Kings and officers had held other ceremonies abiding by
Buddhism at this temple. But in this temple didn't have
monks, only his Majesty Preah Bat Samdech Preah Norodom
Sihanouk stays there during the time of being a priest
for a term (in the year of pig AD 2490 Correspondence
the 31st July 1947). Therefore, it had a normal word
called " Preah Vihear Preah Keo " is not " Wat " in the
said word. When His Majesty celebrated any Buddhism
celebration day, he would invite monks from another
monastery in Phnom Penh City such as Wat Unaloam, Wat
Botumvattey etc. Wat Preah Keo Morakot is located in the
South of Royal palace surrounding by high
long-buildings.
Relaxing Places:
- Description: Besides the above main places in Phnom
Penh, there are other places like the Park of Chatomuk
Hall where Cambodian dance can be performed, the Park of
Independent Monument, the Park of Samdech Hun Sen and
the Naga resort. In addition, there are a lot of Casinos
and night Clubs in Phnom Penh.
Royal Palace:
- How to go: River site
- Location: in the Phnom Penh
- Description: The Royal Palace was built in 1866 under
the reign of King Norodom and is located along the
Sothearos Boulevard. Inside the Royal Palace, there are:
- Tevia Vinichhay Temple: The place where the King is on
throne.
- Khemarin Temple: The place where the King and
Queen live.
- Somran Phirum Temple: The place where the
King rides the Royal Elephant.
- Hor aku or Hor Preah
Khan: The place keeping the throne objects and
accessories.
- Chan Chhaya: The Royal dance hall for
king and relatives and high-ranking officers. In front
of the Royal dance hall, there is a platform for the
King to hold the meeting with people and all levels of
officials
Russian Market:
- Location: Corner of St. 440 & St. 163, Tuol Tompong
Muoy.
Silver Pagoda:
- Description: Also called the Pagoda of the Emerald
Buddha, it is located in the compound of the Royal
Palace. Inside its floor is constructed of 5000 silver
tiles. In the center of the pagoda there is a
magnificent 17th-century emerald Buddha statue made of
baccarat crystal. The walls enclosing the pagoda are
covered with frescoes depicting episodes from the Khmer
version of the Ramayana.
Souvenir Shops:
- Description: The souvenir shops in Phnom Penh consist
of: - Central Market - The surrounding of Fine-arts
School - Toul Tumpung Market - Shops at the big hotels.
Sunset Cruise on the Mekong:
- Description: A one-hour cruise from the capital takes
you along the river to watch the daily life of the
people living on and around the rivers. You'll enjoy a
magnificent sunset, when the reflected rays of the
setting sun cast a golden glow across the river.
The River Front:
- Description: A stroll or cyclo ride along the park
lined riverfront is a must - pubs, restaurants, shops
and tourist boats line the way. The view of the
confluence of the Mekong and the Tonle Sap is
geographically unique. Early risers, check out the
spectacular sunrise over the river in front of the Royal
Palace
Toul Sleng Genocidal Museum:
- Description: In the former time, this museum was the
Secondary School of Toul Sleng. In 1975 this school
became the torturing place for thousands of Cambodian
people (this place was named " S21 " during the Pol Pot
regime) who were seriously tortured to death in
different ways. Nowadays the Toul Sleng museum remains a
lot of evidences include bones and skeletons. In
addition, there is another genocidal museum at Cheung Ek
pagoda in Cheung Ek Commune, Dang Kor District.
Traditional Markets (Phsar):
- Description: The market places in Cambodian cities and
towns always present a hive of activity and a visit to
one or two is a great experience for visitors. In Phnom
Penh we recommend a visit to the Russian Market and the
Central Market. Note that generally most markets open
for daylight hours only, from early morning until early
evening.
Wat Botum:
- Description: Significant because it is one of the
city's original wats, it was founded in 1422 by King
Ponhea Vat. It took its current name in 1865 and its
present structure in 1937. Of photographic note: The wat
compound is crowded with ornate stupas. Just northwest
of the intersection of Sothearos and Sihanouk.
Wat Langka:
- Description: Historical Sites and Buildings.

Wat Neak Kravorn:
- Description: Adorns the western skyline of Boeung Kak
lake. This Wat was inaugurated in 1967 and the vihear
houses some very unique wall paintings. West on
Confederation de la Russie. Turn right at a small street
east of Nehru, go through the train yard.
Wat Phnom:
- Description: In 1372, there was a mountain supervised
by grandmother Penh before King Ponhea Yat. Until 15th
century King Ponhea Yat built the capital in Phnom Penh.
In the area of Wat Phnom, there is a big stupa behind
the temple used for keeping the cremated ash of the
King, Ponhea Yat, the stupas for keeping cremated ash of
the Royal families and remaining Buddhist statues of
Angkorean era in the big stupa behind. Most local and
international visitors like to visit Wat Phnom.
Wat Unaloam:
- Description: Wat Unaloam is a monastery for tourists
who visit and find out the religion in our country. In
addition, the monastery has a stupa built after Angkor.
In Phnom Penh, there are 86 priests, 1,633 monks, 859
novices, 2,520 monks, one chief of monks and seven
Deputy chiefs of monks.
